Special Sessions
Special Session 1
Session Title: Big Geospatial Data towards security of Ukraine and its European integration
Session Chairs:
Prof. Andrii Shelestov, National Technical University of Ukraine “Kyiv Polytechnic Institute”, Space Research Institute NAS Ukraine and SSA Ukraine
Prof. Sergii Skakun, Department of Geographical Sciences, University of Maryland, College Park, MD, United States
Satellite data provides good opportunities to monitor different aspects of security at country level. Traditionally freely available data of 10-30 m resolution has been used for food and environmental security problems. Russian invasion forces us to pay even more attention to agricultural monitoring and assessment of damages in Ukraine, because Ukraine is one of the biggest exporters of agricultural products. Remote sensing is the only source of objective information for uncontrolled territories and territories under military actions. Another challenge is harmonization of remote sensing utilization in Ukraine with European rules and best practices, because Ukraine is an associate member of the EU. This special session covers modern methods and technologies for food and environmental security assessment based on satellite and geospatial data, including damage assessment due to war. To address big data challenges, machine learning models and specialized cloud platforms are utilized.
